Inclusive European roaming does not mean unlimited European roaming. UK operators apply a fair-use allowance: a data ceiling that applies while you are abroad, distinct from your domestic allowance. Below it, roaming is included. Above it, per-megabyte or per-gigabyte charges apply.

For a week of light use this is academic. For a three-week trip, or for anyone who tethers, streams or uploads, the cap is the number that determines whether the trip costs nothing extra or considerably more than expected.

So the question for an O2 customer is rarely "is roaming included" — it usually is. It is "how much data will I use abroad, and how does that compare with my fair-use allowance?"

Check your allowance against your actual usage

Work out your realistic daily consumption and multiply by trip length. Navigation, messaging and social use typically lands between 500 MB and 1 GB per day. Add photo and video uploading and it approaches 2 GB. Tether a laptop and 3 GB or more per day is normal.

A two-week trip at 1 GB per day is 14 GB. Compare that against your fair-use allowance and the answer becomes obvious in either direction.

Where O2 roaming clearly wins

Short and medium trips within the included zone, for anyone whose usage sits comfortably inside the cap. No setup, no second profile, your number stays live for calls and SMS, and no additional cost. For a week in Spain with normal use, there is little reason to add anything.

Where a prepaid Europe plan wins

Long trips and heavy use, for the reason above — the cap becomes binding and charges start. A prepaid regional bundle has a known price and a known ceiling, and running out means buying more rather than being billed after the fact.

The second case is destination coverage. Check whether every country on your route is in O2's included European zone. Switzerland, Norway, Turkey and parts of the Balkans frequently sit outside UK operators' standard zones, and a regional plan covering 35 countries removes that verification step.

The hybrid most heavy users should consider

Keep O2 active for calls and SMS, and use a prepaid eSIM for data on the days you expect heavy use — a working day, a long travel day with constant navigation, or an evening of uploading. That keeps you inside the fair-use allowance while giving you headroom where it matters.
