United Arab Emirates eSIM Plans

The United Arab Emirates regulates voice-over-IP calling. In practice that means WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, and voice and video calling in several other messaging apps are commonly blocked or unreliable while you are connected in the UAE.

This is a national regulatory position, not a property of your plan, your phone or your provider. It applies whether you are on Etisalat, du, hotel Wi-Fi, or a travel eSIM. Any provider implying their eSIM restores WhatsApp calling in the UAE is overpromising.

What does work normally is data. Browsing, maps, email, rideshare, social media, and text messaging in WhatsApp and other apps all function as usual. It is specifically the voice and video calling features that are affected.

If you need to make calls from the UAE, plan around it before you travel. Licensed regional calling services exist, standard cellular calls on your home number will work subject to your own carrier's roaming charges, and business travellers frequently rely on corporate conferencing platforms, some of which remain accessible. Verify what you need against current conditions rather than assuming, since the specifics change.

This is the other thing to set expectations on. UAE plans cost substantially more than European or Asian equivalents. A 1 GB daily plan is $3.62 in the UAE against $1.08 in Italy or Spain. 10 GB over 30 days is $29.00, where Italy is $8.56.

The reason is wholesale pricing in the Emirati market rather than a margin decision, and it applies broadly across providers. It is worth knowing so the pricing does not read as an error when you compare against a European plan.

The practical consequence: size the plan carefully rather than buying a large bundle by reflex. Hotel and mall Wi-Fi is excellent and near-universal across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, so many visitors genuinely need less mobile data here than they would elsewhere.

UAE plans roam on Etisalat. du is not in the roaming set. Etisalat has the strongest coverage in the country, so this is a single-network plan on the leading network.

5G is widely available across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and urban coverage is genuinely dense — including in malls, metro stations and along the main highways between emirates.

The gaps are the desert interior and the mountain areas around Hatta and the Musandam approach. Desert safari excursions frequently lose signal once you are off the highway, which is worth knowing if you are relying on a phone for a pickup arrangement.

Activation is straightforward and needs no registration or documentation. Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi.

A UAE plan covers the Emirates. It does not cover Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain or Kuwait, each of which has its own plan. The Musandam peninsula is Omani territory despite being reached through the UAE, so a UAE plan does not cover it.

If your trip takes in several Gulf states, check whether a regional Gulf option suits your route better than several single-country plans.
