Australia plans roam on Optus. Telstra, which has by a distance the best coverage outside the cities, is not in the roaming set.

Along the coast this barely matters. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide all have solid Optus 5G, the eastern seaboard corridor is well covered, and the great majority of Australian travel happens in that strip.

Inland it matters a great deal. Australia is mostly empty, the distances between towns are enormous, and Telstra's advantage grows with every kilometre from the coast. On Outback highways, in national parks and across the interior generally, an Optus-based plan will lose service where a Telstra user still has bars.

This is a genuine safety consideration rather than an inconvenience. If your itinerary includes remote driving, do not rely on a travel eSIM as your only means of contact — carry the communications your route actually warrants.

City stays, the east coast run from Sydney to Cairns, the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania's populated areas, and the wine regions within reach of the capitals. In all of these Optus coverage is good and 5G is common.

Domestic flights are how most visitors cover Australian distances, and airport and city coverage is uniformly strong.

For a trip built around cities and the coast — which describes most first visits to Australia — this plan is entirely appropriate and the Telstra gap never comes up.

Australia plans come in standard and (nonhkip) versions, both exiting via Singapore. Unusually, the (nonhkip) variant is the more expensive of the two rather than the cheaper.

5 GB over 30 days is $5.40 standard against $9.06 on (nonhkip). 10 GB is $9.40 against $16.98. Neither gives you an Australian exit IP.

Unless you have a specific reason to prefer the alternate routing, the standard plans are the straightforward choice here.

Australian trips run long — the flight discourages short visits — and they involve a lot of navigation, because distances between anything are substantial.

For a two-week coastal trip with maps, messaging and photos, 5 GB is a reasonable baseline. Three or four weeks moving between cities pushes toward 10 GB. Driving routes add more, since navigation is live for hours at a time.

Australian hotel and café Wi-Fi is widely available and generally decent, which pulls real consumption down from what the itinerary suggests.
