Switzerland eSIM Plans

Switzerland plans use Salt and Sunrise. Swisscom is not in the roaming set, and Swisscom is the network with the strongest coverage in the Alps.

In the cities this changes nothing. Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern have 5G on Sunrise, and the valley towns and main rail corridors are well covered. If your trip is Swiss cities, lake towns and the main train routes, these plans are entirely appropriate.

Above the valleys it is a real limitation. Salt in particular has known gaps in mountain areas. High-altitude hiking routes, remote passes, cable-car stations above the tree line and back-country valleys can leave you without usable data on a Salt or Sunrise connection where a Swisscom user still has signal. If mountain connectivity is a safety requirement rather than a convenience, plan for it separately and do not rely solely on a travel eSIM.

Switzerland is a small, densely engineered country and coverage along the inhabited corridors is genuinely good. The rail network — which is how most visitors travel — is well served, and the scenic routes through Interlaken, Lucerne and the Rhône valley hold signal for most of their length.

Altitude, not remoteness, is the variable that matters. A village at 800 metres is usually fine. A ridge at 2,500 metres often is not, regardless of how close it is in map distance to a well-covered town.

Download offline maps and any trail routes before ascending. This is standard practice in the Alps for reasons that have nothing to do with which eSIM you bought.

This catches people out constantly. Switzerland is outside the EU and outside EU roaming rules. A German, French, Italian or Austrian plan does not extend into Switzerland, and neither do EU roaming rights on a European domestic SIM.

It also runs the other way: a Swiss plan does not extend into the surrounding EU countries. Given that a Geneva-to-Chamonix day trip crosses into France and that many Alpine routes touch Italy or Austria, this is worth checking against your actual itinerary rather than assuming.

If your trip is genuinely multi-country Alpine travel, a per-country approach or a regional option will serve you better than a single Swiss plan.

Swiss trips tend to run light on data. Distances are short, the rail app does most of the navigational work, and hotel Wi-Fi is reliable and near-universal.

For a week of cities and train travel, 3 GB is usually comfortable. Add photo and video uploading — and Switzerland generates a lot of both — and 5 GB is the safer figure.

The larger tiers are mainly for remote work or long stays. Given how good Swiss hotel Wi-Fi generally is, most visitors overestimate what they will use on mobile data.
