Germany eSIM Plans

German plans use O2 and Vodafone. Deutsche Telekom, which has the country's strongest rural coverage, is not in the roaming set.

For most trips this is irrelevant. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Cologne all have solid 5G on Vodafone, the Autobahn corridors are well covered, and the ICE routes between major cities are fine apart from tunnels.

It becomes relevant if your itinerary is rural. O2 in particular has known gaps in rural Bavaria and the Black Forest, which are exactly the regions people visit for hiking and driving holidays. If your trip is Alpine foothills, forest villages and back roads rather than cities, plan for stretches with no usable data and download offline maps in advance.

Two habits matter more here than in neighbouring countries. Download offline maps for any rural region before you set out, and do not assume you can look up a train connection mid-journey on a regional line.

German public Wi-Fi is less ubiquitous than in southern Europe. Cafés and hotels offer it, but the assumption that you can hop onto free Wi-Fi anywhere does not hold as reliably. Size your plan on the basis that you will be using mobile data more of the time.

Deutsche Bahn's long-distance ICE trains have on-board Wi-Fi and reasonable trackside coverage. Regional and rural services have neither in any dependable way.

City-based trips run light. Navigation in short bursts, messaging, occasional photo uploads: 3 GB covers a week comfortably.

Driving or hiking trips run heavier, mostly because navigation is live for hours and because you are more likely to be looking things up rather than sitting on hotel Wi-Fi. Budget 5 GB for a week if you are on the road.

The 10 GB and 20 GB tiers are for tethering a laptop, working remotely, or trips long enough that a smaller bundle would run out before the validity does.

Activation is straightforward. Germany requires no registration or documentation for a data eSIM. Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi.

The important limit: this is a Germany plan, not an EU plan. It will not follow you into Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands or Poland. Germany sits at the centre of Europe and is one of the easiest countries to accidentally leave, so if your route crosses a border you need a plan for each country or a regional option.

Switzerland in particular is not in the EU, and a German plan does not extend there under any arrangement.
