Spain plans roam across Movistar and Orange. Movistar has the broadest coverage nationally, with particular strength in rural Andalusia and Catalonia; Orange is solid nationwide with good 5G in Madrid and Barcelona.

This is a comfortable pairing. Unlike Germany or Switzerland, where our plans route around the coverage leader, in Spain the leader is included and you get a second network alongside it.

5G is live in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Bilbao. Rural Andalusia, inland Extremadura and the northern mountains run on LTE, which is entirely adequate for navigation and messaging.

Spain is not just the mainland, and a lot of Spanish trips are island trips. The Balearics — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza — and the Canaries — Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and the rest — are Spanish territory and are normally treated as part of Spain for mobile coverage purposes.

Coverage on the populated parts of both groups is good, concentrated around the resort areas and main towns. Where it thins is the volcanic interiors — Teide's upper slopes, the Anaga and Masca ravines on Tenerife, the tramuntana ridges on Mallorca — and on inter-island ferry crossings.

If your itinerary is island-heavy, confirm the plan is live before you leave a main town. Discovering an activation problem in a mountain village on La Palma is the avoidable version of this problem.

Spain runs light. Cities are walkable, café and hotel Wi-Fi is widespread and generally decent, and the AVE high-speed rail network makes intercity travel quick enough that you are not navigating for long.

A week in Barcelona or Madrid with messaging and photo uploads sits at 3 GB. Two weeks combining cities and coast is a 5 GB trip. Island-hopping or driving Andalusia pushes toward 10 GB, mostly because of live navigation.

Beach holidays consume less than people expect — long stretches on hotel Wi-Fi pull the average down considerably.

Spain follows EU roaming rules and asks for no registration or documentation for a data eSIM. Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi.

The limit is the usual one: this is a Spain plan, not an EU plan. Portugal, France and Andorra are not covered. Andorra in particular catches people out on Pyrenean trips — it is neither Spain nor the EU.

Gibraltar is also not covered by a Spain plan.
