United Kingdom plans roam across Three, O2 and a legacy T-Mobile UK entry. EE, which has the widest 5G coverage in the country, is not in the roaming set.

The practical read: you are getting the networks whose 5G rollout has been slower rather than the leader. Three offers strong value and its 5G footprint has been expanding quickly; O2 is dependable but its 5G reach trails EE. In London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh this is a non-issue — all four UK networks are dense there and you will get 5G on Three or O2 without difficulty.

It matters if your trip is rural. Highland Scotland, mid-Wales and the further reaches of Cornwall and Northumberland are where the gap between EE and the others is widest, and where you should expect LTE at best and dead ground in places.

The UK is unusually well supplied with free Wi-Fi. Most cafés, pubs, hotels, museums and large stations offer it, and city transport is generally quick enough that you are not navigating for long stretches.

That pushes real-world consumption down. A week of London sightseeing with messaging and photo uploads rarely exceeds 3 GB. Two weeks across several cities sits comfortably in the 5 GB tier.

Where consumption climbs is driving holidays — Scotland's North Coast 500, the Lake District, Snowdonia — because live navigation runs for hours and rural Wi-Fi is much sparser than in the cities.

Rail is how most visitors move around Britain, and trackside coverage is inconsistent in a way that catches people out. Main-line routes out of London are reasonable. Cross-country and rural branch lines drop signal frequently and for long stretches.

On-board Wi-Fi exists on many long-distance services but is often congested and sometimes requires a sign-in that itself needs a connection to complete.

Practical habit: screenshot or download your ticket and your onward connection before you board rather than relying on pulling them up mid-journey.

A United Kingdom plan covers all four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Nothing extra is needed to cross those internal borders.

The Republic of Ireland is a separate country and is not covered. This trips up people driving from Belfast to Dublin, or combining a Northern Ireland trip with a few days in Galway. Ireland needs its own plan.

The UK is also outside the EU, so a UK plan does not extend into France or anywhere else in the EU, and an EU plan does not cover Britain. Activation itself is simple — the UK asks for no registration or documentation for a data eSIM.
