India requires identity verification for mobile connections. For residents that means Aadhaar; for visitors it means passport, visa, photographs, a local address and a verification process that can take anything from an hour to a couple of days depending on where you try it.

Travellers routinely arrive expecting to buy a SIM at the airport and find the process slower and more document-heavy than anticipated. Some airport counters handle it efficiently; many do not.

A travel eSIM sidesteps this entirely. The profile is issued against your purchase rather than against an Indian identity check, so there is nothing to present on arrival and nothing to wait for. For a short trip this is often the single strongest argument for using one in India.

India plans roam on Jio. Single-network roaming is normally a compromise, but Jio operates the largest 5G network in India and has the broadest national footprint, so the trade-off lands well.

5G is live across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, and Jio's rollout has been the most aggressive of the Indian operators. Secondary cities are increasingly covered.

Rural India runs on LTE, which is entirely adequate for navigation, messaging, ride-hailing and payments. Hill stations, desert regions and the far northeast will have genuine gaps.

Indian travel leans heavily on apps in a way that European travel does not. Ride-hailing is the default way to move around cities, UPI payment apps are used constantly, translation gets steady use, and train and hotel bookings all run through apps that expect a live connection.

Budget 1 GB per day as a realistic baseline for a city-based trip, rising to 2 GB with regular photo and video sharing.

Indian data pricing is also noticeably higher in our catalogue than the domestic Indian market, which is among the cheapest in the world. That difference reflects roaming wholesale rather than local retail, so comparing against what a resident pays is misleading.

Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi. Indian airports have Wi-Fi but it frequently requires an OTP sent to an Indian mobile number, which is precisely the thing you do not yet have.

That OTP loop is a well-known arrival trap: airport Wi-Fi wants an Indian number, and getting an Indian number requires connectivity or a counter visit. Arriving with a working eSIM removes it.
