People also ask / FAQ

What plans are available for Italy?

We currently show 16 plans for Italy, with prices starting from $0.64. Available options range from 0.49 to 50 GB and 1 to 180 days, and some plans include daily unlimited data. Compare validity, data amount, and destination coverage before checkout so the plan matches your trip length and expected usage.

How do I install the eSIM after purchase?

After checkout, we email the QR code and setup details. Install it over Wi-Fi before you travel, then enable the new line in your phone's cellular settings when you arrive. Keep your primary SIM active if you need calls or SMS, and use the installation guide for step-by-step help on iPhone and Android.

Which networks does the eSIM use in Italy?

The plan connects to local partner networks in Italy. When carrier data is available, we show the operators we could identify for this destination, including TIM, Iliad, Wind. Actual network selection can depend on signal, device support, plan routing, and local coverage, so check the carrier section before choosing a plan.

Which plan should I choose for my trip?

Choose a smaller plan if you mainly use maps, messaging, email, and light browsing. Pick a larger or longer-validity plan if you stream, use hotspot, upload photos, work remotely, or travel for more days. Compare the options above by data, validity, and price, or browse another country from the destinations hub.

What your eSIM connects to in Italy

Plans route through one or more of these local mobile networks, picked automatically by signal strength:

  • TIM5G
  • Iliad5G
  • Wind5G

Coverage and speed depend on the local carrier's infrastructure and your device's band support. Rural and indoor coverage may fall back to 4G or 3G.

Network Reality

eSIMSupra connects to TIM, Vodafone Italy, WindTre networks in Italy, offering excellent coverage. 5G in Rome, Milan, Naples, Florence, and Turin. Rural Tuscany and southern regions may have LTE-only coverage.

Activation Tip

Italy follows EU roaming. No additional registration needed for eSIM data plans.

Price Context

TIM/Vodafone roaming costs €6-9/day. eSIMSupra plans start from €3.

Choosing an eSIM for Italy

Italy is one of the few European destinations where the roaming partner list works in your favour β€” TIM is included, and it is the network that holds up best once you leave the cities.

You get TIM, and in Italy that is the one you want

Italy plans roam across TIM, WindTre and Iliad. TIM matters most here: it has the strongest coverage nationally, and its advantage is largest exactly where visitors struggle β€” rural Tuscany, the southern regions and Sicily.

This is worth saying because it is not true everywhere. Several of our European destinations route through the second and third networks in the market rather than the leader. Italy is the case where the strongest national network is in the mix, so coverage away from Rome and Milan is genuinely better than the price suggests.

5G is live in Rome, Milan, Naples, Florence and Turin. Rural Tuscany, the deep south and much of the island interior remain LTE, which is entirely adequate for navigation, messaging and photo uploads.

Where Italian coverage actually gets thin

The gaps are geographic rather than regional. Hill towns sitting in valleys, the Amalfi coast road where cliffs block line of sight, mountain sections of Tuscany and Umbria, and boat crossings to the smaller islands are the places where signal drops regardless of provider.

Practical consequence: download your offline maps for the region before you set out, particularly if you are driving between hill towns. Reception typically returns as you climb back out of the valley.

Train travel along the Rome–Florence–Milan spine is well covered, with the usual tunnel interruptions. Regional lines into the interior are patchier.

Sizing a typical Italian trip

Italy tends to run lighter on data than expectations suggest. Cities are walkable, so navigation is used in short bursts rather than for hours, and Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafΓ©s.

For a week of sightseeing, messaging and steady photo uploads, 3 GB is usually enough. Two weeks across several cities sits comfortably at 5 GB. The 10 GB tier is for heavy photo and video posting, or if you are tethering a laptop.

If you are driving rather than taking trains, add a margin β€” live navigation for several hours a day is the single largest consumer on an Italian itinerary.

One thing to check before you buy

These are Italy plans. They work in Italy. They are not EU-wide plans, and they will not follow you into France, Switzerland or Austria.

That catches people out because Italian domestic SIMs bought locally do carry EU roaming rights. A travel eSIM sold for a single country does not automatically behave the same way. If your trip crosses borders, buy a plan for each country or check whether a regional option covers your route.

Otherwise activation is straightforward. Italy follows EU roaming rules and asks for no additional registration or paperwork for a data eSIM. Install the profile before you fly, while you still have home Wi-Fi.

Italy eSIM questions

Which Italian networks will my eSIM use?

Italy plans roam across TIM, WindTre and Iliad. TIM has the strongest national coverage, particularly in rural Tuscany, the southern regions and Sicily, and its inclusion is the main reason Italian coverage holds up outside the cities.

Can I use an Italy eSIM elsewhere in the EU?

No. These are Italy-only plans and do not extend to other EU countries. Unlike an Italian domestic SIM, a single-country travel eSIM does not carry EU roaming rights. For a multi-country trip, buy a plan per country or check the regional options.

Will I have signal in the hill towns and on the Amalfi coast?

Mostly, with interruptions. Valleys, cliff-shadowed stretches of coast road and mountain sections lose signal regardless of provider or plan. Download offline maps for the region before setting out, particularly if driving. Coverage usually returns on higher ground.

How much data do I need for a week in Italy?

Around 3 GB suits a typical week of walking-city sightseeing, messaging and photo uploads. Two weeks across multiple cities sits nearer 5 GB. Increase it if you are driving, since live navigation for several hours a day is the largest consumer on an Italian itinerary.

Is any registration or documentation required in Italy?

No. Italy follows EU roaming rules and a data eSIM needs no additional registration or paperwork. Install the profile before departure while on home Wi-Fi.
