South Korea eSIM Plans

Korea plans roam on SK Telecom and LG U+. Both run extensive 5G, and Korean network density is unusual by international standards: 5G reaches nearly everywhere including subway tunnels and rural areas, not just city centres.

This inverts the usual advice. In most countries the practical question is where your plan will fail. In Korea, coverage on the populated peninsula is dependable enough that you can more or less stop thinking about it and choose purely on data and price.

Subway coverage deserves a specific mention because it is genuinely unusual — Seoul's underground network carries data throughout, so a long commute across the city is usable in a way it would not be in London or New York.

Korean plans come in standard, routed via Hong Kong, and (nonhkip), routed via Singapore. Unlike Japan, neither routes from inside Korea, so neither gives you a Korean IP address.

What differs is price, and the gap is wider than in most countries. 10 GB over 30 days is $9.40 standard against $13.20 on (nonhkip). 20 GB over 30 days is $16.40 against $22.00. The standard Hong Kong routing is consistently the cheaper of the two.

Unless you have a specific reason to prefer Singapore routing, the standard plans are the better value in Korea. That is a straightforward recommendation and it is the opposite of the advice for the United States, where the locally-routed option is sometimes cheaper.

Korea leans on apps more heavily than most destinations. Navigation generally means Naver Map or KakaoMap rather than Google Maps, which has restricted functionality in Korea for regulatory reasons. Translation, transit cards, food delivery and messaging all run through apps that expect a live connection.

That pushes consumption above what a comparable European trip would use. Light use lands near 1 GB per day; regular photo and video sharing takes it to 2 GB.

One practical note: download Naver Map or KakaoMap before you arrive and expect Google Maps to be less useful for walking and driving directions than you are used to. This is a Korean regulatory quirk, not a network problem.

Korea requires Alien Registration for long-term domestic SIMs, which is why buying a local Korean SIM as a short-term visitor is awkward. Tourist eSIM plans are not subject to that, so there is nothing to arrange.

Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi. Incheon has good free Wi-Fi if you need to finish setup after landing.

Worth knowing: Korean 5G runs on n78 primarily, and mmWave deployment has been limited. A phone without n78 support will fall back to LTE, which is still fast on Korean networks.
