Which networks does the eSIM use in Mexico?

Actual network selection can depend on signal, device support, plan routing, and local coverage, so check the carrier section before choosing a plan.

Which plan should I choose for my trip?

Choose a smaller plan if you mainly use maps, messaging, email, and light browsing. Pick a larger or longer-validity plan if you stream, use hotspot, upload photos, work remotely, or travel for more days. What your eSIM connects to in Mexico

Plans route through one or more of these local mobile networks, picked automatically by signal strength:

  • AT&T5G

Coverage and speed depend on the local carrier's infrastructure and your device's band support. Rural and indoor coverage may fall back to 4G or 3G.

Network Reality

eSIMSupra connects to Telcel, AT&T Mexico, Movistar networks in Mexico, offering excellent coverage. 5G in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana. Rural areas may have LTE-only coverage.

Activation Tip

Mexico has straightforward eSIM activation. Tourist plans are widely available.

Price Context

Telcel tourist SIM costs MXN 200-400. eSIMSupra plans start from MXN 80.

Choosing an eSIM for Mexico

Mexican plans roam on AT&T Mexico. Telcel — which covers the country far more comprehensively, especially away from the cities — is not included, and Mexican travel is mostly away from the cities.

AT&T Mexico only, and why that matters here

Mexico plans roam on AT&T Mexico. Telcel, which has the strongest coverage in the country and a decisive advantage in rural and coastal areas, is not in the roaming set.

In the cities this is workable. Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Tijuana all have solid AT&T coverage with 5G in the main areas, and the northern border region is well served.

It matters because most visitors to Mexico are not going to Monterrey. They are going to the Yucatán, Oaxaca, Baja, the Pacific coast — and those are exactly the areas where Telcel's advantage is largest and AT&T's coverage is patchier. Cenotes, ruins outside the main sites, coastal roads between beach towns and the Oaxacan sierra are all places where you should expect to lose signal.

Plan for offline on the routes people actually take

The practical consequence is specific. If you are driving the Yucatán between Mérida, Valladolid and Tulum, or the Oaxaca coast road, or Baja south of Ensenada, download offline maps before you set out and do not rely on live navigation.

Archaeological sites are frequently outside town coverage. Chichén Itzá and Tulum are well served; the smaller and more interesting sites often are not.

Resort areas in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta have good coverage and excellent hotel Wi-Fi, so a resort-based trip rarely encounters the problem at all.

Mexican pricing sits higher than you might expect

Mexico plans are noticeably more expensive than comparable European ones — 5 GB over 30 days is $14.98 against $4.76 in Spain or Portugal. That reflects roaming wholesale in the Mexican market rather than a decision on our side.

Because of that, size the plan deliberately rather than buying a large bundle by default. Resort and hotel Wi-Fi is good across the tourist areas, which pulls real consumption down considerably.

For a beach-based trip, a smaller plan plus hotel Wi-Fi is usually the sensible combination. For a driving itinerary, buy more — that is where you actually need it.

Activation and limits

Activation is straightforward with no registration or documentation required. Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi.

A Mexico plan covers Mexico only. It does not extend into the United States, Guatemala or Belize, which matters for border crossings in both directions — Tijuana and San Diego are a single urban area but two separate coverage zones.

If you are combining Mexico with the southern US or with Guatemala, buy a plan for each.

Mexico eSIM questions

Which Mexican network will my eSIM use?

Mexico plans roam on AT&T Mexico. Telcel, which has substantially better coverage particularly in rural and coastal areas, is not included. Cities and the northern border region are well covered; the Yucatán interior, Oaxaca and Baja are patchier.

Will I have signal driving in the Yucatán?

Intermittently. AT&T covers the main towns and highways but drops between them, and Telcel — the network with the coverage advantage there — is not in the roaming set. Download offline maps before setting out and do not rely on live navigation.

Why are Mexican eSIM plans more expensive than European ones?

Roaming wholesale in the Mexican market is higher. 5 GB over 30 days is $14.98 in Mexico against $4.76 in Spain. Size the plan deliberately rather than buying large by default, since resort and hotel Wi-Fi is good.

Does a Mexico eSIM work in the United States?

No. Mexico and the US are separate plans. This catches people at the border — Tijuana and San Diego form one urban area but two coverage zones. Guatemala and Belize are also not covered.

How much data do I need for a week in Mexico?

Around 3 GB for a resort-based trip where hotel Wi-Fi carries most of the load. Considerably more — 10 GB or above — if you are driving between towns, where navigation runs constantly and coverage is least reliable.
