What your eSIM connects to in Netherlands

Plans route through one or more of these local mobile networks, picked automatically by signal strength:

  • KPN5G
  • Vodafone5G

Coverage and speed depend on the local carrier's infrastructure and your device's band support. Rural and indoor coverage may fall back to 4G or 3G.

Network Reality

eSIMSupra connects to KPN, Vodafone Netherlands, T-Mobile Netherlands networks in Netherlands, offering excellent coverage. 5G in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht. Rural areas may have LTE-only coverage.

Activation Tip

Netherlands follows EU roaming. No registration required for eSIM data plans.

Price Context

KPN roaming costs €6-8/day. eSIMSupra plans start from €3.

Choosing an eSIM for Netherlands

Dutch plans include KPN, the country's coverage leader, in a country small and dense enough that connectivity is genuinely a non-issue. The thing to plan for here is not signal — it is how easily you leave the country.

Coverage is not the problem here

Netherlands plans roam on KPN and Vodafone Netherlands. KPN has the best coverage in the country, and unlike several of our European destinations the leader is included rather than routed around.

The Netherlands is also small, flat and densely populated, which makes it one of the easiest places in Europe to cover. 5G is live across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, and rural areas — such as they are — run good LTE.

Practically, you can stop thinking about coverage on a Dutch trip. There is no equivalent of the Alpine altitude problem or the Outback distance problem. Choose on data and price.

You will leave the country more easily than you think

This is the real planning consideration. The Netherlands is compact and its borders are close to everything. Maastricht is nearer to Brussels, Cologne and Aachen than to Amsterdam. A day trip from Amsterdam to Antwerp or Düsseldorf is entirely normal.

A Netherlands plan covers the Netherlands. It does not extend into Belgium or Germany, and unlike a Dutch domestic SIM it does not carry EU roaming rights.

If your trip includes any cross-border element — and a surprising number of Dutch itineraries do — either buy a plan per country or use a regional option that covers the route. Discovering this at Belgian passport-free border with no signal is the avoidable version.

Cycling and trains, and what they need

Dutch travel means bicycles and trains more than cars, and both have connectivity implications worth knowing.

Cycling navigation runs continuously and drains both data and battery. If you plan to cycle between cities on the national route network, download offline maps and bring a power bank — the data cost is modest but the battery cost is not.

Train coverage is good across the Randstad and the main intercity routes. NS journey planning is app-based and works well, but downloading your ticket before boarding remains sensible practice.

Sizing a Dutch trip

The Netherlands is a low-consumption destination. Cities are compact, Wi-Fi is ubiquitous in cafés, hotels, museums and stations, and distances are short.

A week in Amsterdam with messaging, maps and photos sits comfortably at 3 GB. Two weeks taking in several cities is a 5 GB trip.

The larger tiers are for remote work or extended stays. Given how good Dutch public Wi-Fi is, most visitors overestimate what they will use on mobile data.

Netherlands eSIM questions

Which Dutch networks will my eSIM use?

Netherlands plans roam on KPN and Vodafone Netherlands. KPN has the best coverage in the country and is included, which — combined with how small and densely populated the Netherlands is — makes coverage effectively a non-issue.

Does a Netherlands eSIM work in Belgium or Germany?

No. This is a Netherlands-only plan and does not carry EU roaming rights the way a Dutch domestic SIM would. Given how close the borders are and how common cross-border day trips are, check your itinerary before relying on it.

Is coverage good enough for cycling between cities?

Yes. Coverage along the national cycle network is reliable. The constraint is battery rather than signal — continuous navigation drains a phone quickly, so bring a power bank and download offline maps.

How much data do I need for a week in the Netherlands?

Around 3 GB is usually ample. Dutch cities are compact and Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere — cafés, hotels, museums, stations. Most visitors use less mobile data here than they expect.

Is registration required for a Dutch eSIM?

No. The Netherlands follows EU roaming rules and a data eSIM needs no registration or documentation.
