Portugal plans roam on NOS and Vodafone Portugal. MEO, which has the strongest nationwide coverage, is not in the roaming set.

Portuguese tourism is overwhelmingly coastal — Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, the surf towns between them — and NOS and Vodafone both cover that strip well, with 5G in Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Coimbra.

The gap appears inland. The Alentejo is sparsely populated and large; the mountainous north around Peneda-Gerês and the Serra da Estrela has genuine dead ground. These are exactly the areas people drive through on a road trip rather than fly into, so it is worth downloading offline maps for the route.

Portugal is not only the mainland. Madeira and the Azores are Portuguese territory and popular destinations in their own right, particularly for hiking and whale watching.

Island coverage generally follows the populated areas — Funchal, Ponta Delgada, the main towns — and thins in the volcanic interiors and along the levada and crater trails that people actually go there to walk.

Confirm the coverage list before relying on a mainland Portugal plan for an island trip. Atlantic territories are not always included in a mainland country's footprint the way visitors assume, and this is the kind of thing worth verifying rather than discovering on a trailhead.

Portugal runs light. Lisbon and Porto are compact and walkable, café Wi-Fi is near-universal and generally good, and the distances are short enough that navigation is used in bursts rather than continuously.

A week in Lisbon or Porto sits comfortably at 3 GB. Two weeks combining cities and the Algarve is a 5 GB trip.

Driving pushes it up — the Alentejo and the northern mountains involve long stretches of live navigation with sparse Wi-Fi between towns. Hiking Madeira's levadas or the Azores' crater routes similarly benefits from offline preparation rather than more data.

Portugal follows EU roaming rules and requires no registration or documentation. Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi.

This is a Portugal plan and does not extend into Spain. That catches people on Lisbon-to-Seville or Porto-to-Santiago routes, and on the many day trips across the Spanish border from the Algarve and the north.

If your itinerary genuinely spans both countries, buy a plan for each or check whether a regional option covers the route.
