Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya have solid 5G. The interesting question is what happens on the smaller islands and up in the northern hills, because that is where a large share of Thai itineraries go.

Thailand plans roam across AIS, TrueMove H and DTAC. AIS is the one that matters for island travel — it has the strongest reach into the islands and rural areas, and it is the reason coverage on the smaller Gulf and Andaman islands is better than you might expect.

Expect LTE rather than 5G on most islands, and expect genuine dead spots on boat crossings and in the interior of the larger islands. The northern hill routes around Pai and Mae Hong Son are similar: fine in towns, patchy between them.

One Thailand plan does not follow the normal pattern. Thailand 50 GB over 10 days at $15.98 packs a very large allowance into a short window, and it is also the only Thailand plan that routes out from inside Thailand rather than Singapore.

That combination suits a specific and very common trip: a one-to-two-week holiday with heavy use — video calls home, uploading dive and beach footage, streaming in the evenings, tethering a tablet — where a daily allowance would throttle every afternoon.

For a longer, lighter trip it is the wrong shape, because the ten-day window is short. Match the validity to your trip length first, then the data.

Thailand tends to run heavier than European trips. Rideshare and food delivery apps are used constantly, translation gets steady use, and there is usually more video and photo sharing than on a city break.

Light use — maps, messaging, some social — lands around 500 MB to 1 GB per day. Regular photo and video uploading pushes to 2 GB. Streaming or tethering moves you past 3 GB per day.

Wi-Fi is widely available in Thai hotels, hostels and cafés and is often good, which pulls real-world consumption down. A 5 GB or 10 GB bundle over 30 days covers most two-week trips comfortably.

Thailand is one of the simpler destinations. Tourist data plans need no registration and no paperwork, so there is nothing to arrange on arrival.

Install the profile before you fly while on home Wi-Fi. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang both have free airport Wi-Fi if you need to finish setup after landing, but doing it in advance is easier.

If you are island-hopping, activate and confirm the connection while still on the mainland or in a main town. Discovering an activation problem on a pier with no signal is the avoidable version of this.
